Our soap-making journey began after our first child was born with severely dry skin.
Back in the 1990s, our first child arrived in the world and looked a little overbaked on arrival. But we thought we could overcome this with a moisturiser. “It’ll be fine”, we thought.
We cared for our child to the best of our ability. Then one day, all drama broke loose on the skin. It was an overnight disaster.
We felt:
- blindsided
- powerless
- helpless
- bewildered
- clueless
- confused
- judged
We felt like everyone would think we are not responsible parents. Our child’s skin condition hurt our confidence.
Naturely, we sought medical help. The skin specialist offered us some help. Our desire was to find a way to use soap to clean sensitive skin. In time, one of the grandparents made a helpful suggestion that we change soaps to a “pure soap”.
We did. We started buying soap from overseas and importing and using what was called pure soap. It was pure white too… It came from a factory. We had taken on the route of changing soap to prevent dry skin symptoms.
Dry skin is a common problem, and a common solution is to layer the skin with man-made products from a factory.
With the pure soap product, we were using a factory-made solution. It was very helpful, but we thought it probably did not have all-natural ingredients.

Then we started buying pure soap from Japan. Finally, following a comment from Junko’s mother, we thought about making our own soap.
Neil tells the story like this. “We’ve been part of the “maker community” since mum’s cousin came back from a visit to “Rocky”, where she watched a clip on the Bradie Bunch*. It was about a woman with goats. That was the beginning of us making things as a family. In the TV clip, the story has it that a lady gets some goats, then goes on to make a business out of selling goat milk soap in Australia.
Neil continues the story by saying, “Junko had been asking me to get goats for a while, so I said, ‘If you can make soap we can get goats’.” So she did.
